Why we do what we do
New Scribbler is a successful passion project that was inspired by another, even more successful passion project: the movie Beasts of the Southern Wild, nominated for four Academy Awards and winner of the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance and the Caméra d’Or at Cannes.
New Scribbler founder Mark Christiansen provided on-set supervision for this movie which made extensive use of practical effects. As featured in the Kickstarter video below, there was a clear Aha! moment when it became clear that effects director Ray Tintori was mining dog-eared copies of Cinefex. This allowed the production to combine contemporary cinema technology with old-school practical effects leveraging techniques that were first perfected in the 1980s and 1990s, the golden age of innovation in visual effects.
It wasn’t long before the core development team was assembled and a deal was struck with the publisher of Cinefex. Building a full publishing platform with a 3D UI that supports exact layout of text, images and video was no trivial task, and the initial version of the free app delivered new issues of Cinefex only.
It was at this point, with tens of thousand of pages of print left to convert, that we decided to roll the dice and see if our audience wanted this collection as much as we wanted to provide it to them. We launched the Cinefex Classic Kickstarter campaign and produced a video that features testimonials from Adam Savage and John Knoll, in addition to Ray and Mark.
